Low Battery Seawall Restoration Project showcased by national engineer group

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — An event was held Thursday to highlight the Low Battery Seawall Restoration Project and the role engineers and public works professionals play.

The National Engineering and Public Works Roadshow visited the seawall project. They held a showcase discussing how the project “underscores the importance of innovative engineering solutions in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and rising sea levels.”

It also highlighted the role of engineers and public works in projects and improvements that increase coastal resiliency along the historic area.

Mayor William Cogswell and Congressman Jim Clyburn delivered remarks alongside executives from major engineering and public works groups at the event that took place on Murray Boulevard.

“When this project started more than four years ago, it was one of the city’s first to directly address a problem that everyone in the Lowcountry understands – our climate is changing, producing stronger storms, higher tides, and more destructive, unpredictable weather patterns,” said Jay Wolverton, Board Chair with ACEC. “Tropical Storm Idalia, which breached the Battery last year, was not an anomaly. It is our new normal. We need to design our infrastructure not only for today but into the future to mitigate risk and ensure the safety of our neighbors.”
