2 injured in three-vehicle crash at Bells Crossroads

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded to a three-vehicle collision that injured two people at the intersection of Bells Crossroads.

Crews say a pickup truck hauling a flatbed trailer with a passenger car pulled out in front of a northbound semi-truck. The semi-truck struck the trailer and flipped the towed vehicle on its side.

Authorities say the semi-truck jackknifed causing the trailer to strike the cab, resulting in the fuel tank being breached.

The accident blocked the intersection and the semi-truck spilled a large amount of diesel, engine oil and transmission fluid on the highway.

Crews treated the injured and transported two people to a local hospital.

Officials say firefighters contained the spilled fluid and requested HazMat to respond. Hazmat plugged the leaking fuel tank, and a private contractor helped clean up the spilled fluids.

The intersection was closed to traffic Friday afternoon and rerouted for 4 1/2 hours.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
