3 Lowcountry spots among Southern Living’s “15 Most Beautiful Coastal Towns in the South”

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)—Three communities in South Carolina ranked among the “15 Most Beautiful Coastal Towns in the South,” with Charleston, Georgetown, and Beaufort snagging spots.

No. 4 Beaufort, South Carolina

The magazine noted that Beaufort’s Waterfront Park and its 100-slip marina with an amphitheater, playground, and farmer’s market contributed to the town’s high ranking. Beaufort is situated on Port Royal Island. Notably, Forrest Gump was filmed in several Beaufort locations.

No. 7 Charleston, South Carolina

Expect the Holy City to be higher on the list? I did, too. However, Southern Living did acknowledge that many who think of a southern coastal town think of Charleston first. As Charleston natives know, there is no shortage of the best Lowcountry cuisine, shopping, and activities in Charleston. Feel like relaxing away from the city on the beach? Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach, and more are just short trips over the bridge and contribute to why Charleston made the list.

No. 13 Georgetown, South Carolina

Southern Living referred to Georgetown as the “crown jewel” of the hammock coast of South Carolina, saying Georgetown is a smaller, more relaxed version of Charleston. Georgetown also offers several beach spots with a short commute, like Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, and more. If you find yourself in Georgetown, take a walk along Front Street to discover historical homes, stop by a museum, or do a bit of shopping.

The list has the top three: No. 1 Fairhope, Alabama, No. 2 Wilmington, North Carolina, and No. 3 Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
