Residents fed up with massive potholes near Moncks Corner neighborhood

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – People who live in one Moncks Corner community are fed up with potholes. Residents on Shannonwood Drive said the potholes make it difficult to get to and from their homes.

“I’ve lived here for 18 years. I’ve been a resident right here for 18 years,” said Jennifer Collins. “And this highway right here, this turn-in, and this driveway has been nothing but an absolute disaster for the last 18 years.”

Collins lives in St. Francis Villas, just off Shannonwood Drive. She said the road has been repaired at least once that she knows of.

“I guess you guys have already got photos of it and you can see. It’s like, I mean, you gotta have a four-wheel drive truck, truthfully, to come in and out of this thing without damaging your car. And by all means, you need to be somebody young and in good-bodied condition to ride through it because it will throw your back out of place which it has done to mine,” she said.

News 2 spoke with Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton about the problem, who agreed it was a big issue. “I was first emailed about this a little over a week ago and one of the residents of Shannonwood sent me some pictures,” he said.

Mayor Hamilton said he has learned that this is a private road. So, code enforcement is going to get to work figuring out who is responsible for its repairs.

“We’ve recognized and already have looked into it. We have two potential responsible parties. We are reaching out to them. Our code enforcement will start writing fines for this situation. Nobody should have to put up with this kind of destruction of their roads,” he said.

Hamilton says either the Shannonwood neighborhood owners or the St. Francis Villas owners are responsible for taking care of this private road.

“We’re gonna stay on this until this is fixed,” the mayor said.
