Stair climb at North Charleston Coliseum to honor 9/11 first responders

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – First responders from across the country will climb stairs inside the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday to honor those who gave and died during the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Charleston Memorial Stair Climb will be held June 21, with more than 400 climbers expected to represent the 412 first responders who died in the terror attacks.

“Each person will participate by climbing 110 flights in the coliseum, the number of flights in the Twin Towers,” organizers explained. “In 2024, we once again sold out the event and had over 500 people in attendance with climbers, spectators, and volunteers.”

The event also hopes to raise funds for beneficiaries directly related to first responders and first responder causes, along with line-of-duty deaths.

“Funds may go to families who have lost a first responder in the line of duty or to non-profit organizations that directly support first responders,” said organizers.

The event is expected to get underway by 8:30 a.m.
