Local shrimpers raise money for Cindy “the net lady” to continue essential work

MCCLELLANVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — The South Carolina Shrimpers Association is working to give back to a woman who is essential to its industry.

Cindy, “the net lady,” has been working for 50 years alongside shrimpers, mending their nets on land or by sea. However, her car recently broke down, which has been impacting her work.

“It’s been a couple of months ago, so every time somebody wants to work, they got to come get me,” Cindy said.

Being based in McClellanville hasn’t been easy, as she relies on her car to travel for the job she is passionate about.

“I do love what I do because I get to go places. They call me to North Carolina all the way to Beaufort just to go down there and work. Penny’s Point, Edisto a long time ago – back when there was boats there, lot of boats on Shem Creek, you know there’s boats here. When they need me, I go, but no, I ain’t go nowhere to go,” Cindy explained.

The South Carolina Shrimpers Association saw it was time to care for one of their own.

“She’s tough, she’s resilient, she’s such a good kind-hearted person – salt to the earth. You know this is the least we can do to try to help her to getting her back out on the road. So, she can do what she loves and what she’s passionate about in helping to fix these nets,” said Bryan Jones, SC Shrimpers Association vice president.

Vice President Jones kicked off a rare fundraising campaign in response to the fact that many shrimpers rely on Cindy and her talents, especially as shrimp season begins.

“The net lady” said she is grateful for the organization’s work and is always willing to help out when she can.

“Because I’ve always tried to be independent and not have to ask for anything. But they see my need, and I just – I appreciate everything, but it makes my heart, you know. Anytime they need me, I’m here,” Cindy said.
