Two dogs attacked by possibly rabid raccoon in Williamsburg County, deputies say
KINGSTREE, S.C. (WCBD) — Deputies are urging pet owners to take caution following reports of an “aggressive” raccoon attacking two dogs in a Kingstree neighborhood last week.
Deputies with the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to an animal complaint on Blakely Street on May 29 and spoke with a resident who witnessed the attack.
The witness reportedly told deputies that the animal was exhibiting aggressive behavior and charged directly at them at one point during the attack.
“The citizen took decisive action and eliminated the raccoon,” officials said in a June 5 news release.
The deceased animal was taken to the Kingstree Animal Hospital for further examination, where it was determined that the raccoon may have been infected with rabies.
“If you are a resident in the area mentioned above and own a pet, it is imperative to maintain
vigilant supervision of your animal while it is outdoors,” officials said, encouraging owners to watch for behavioral signs of rabies such as increased aggression, disorientation, or unusual daytime activity.
Other signs of infection can include excessive drooling, paralysis, and difficulty swallowing, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
“Additionally, ensure your pets are vaccinated and kept indoors, and avoid allowing them to roam freely or interact with wild animals,” officials continued.
Pet owners who observe any of these changes or have concerns about their pet’s health should contact their local veterinarian immediately.
