Berkeley County School District to launch pilot program to detect weapons at Philip Simmons High School
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)—The Berkeley County School District will begin a pilot program for random weapons screeners at Philip Simmons High School on Wednesday.
District officials said the screeners will not be used daily, and they can be used anywhere on the school campus.
It comes just one day after a student was found with a gun on the school’s campus. That gun was confiscated and secured, and the district is following disciplinary protocol for the student.
Following the incident, the school district said that safety was a main priority on campus, which is why they decided to implement the pilot program immediately.
The program will be piloted for the next few weeks, and if it goes well, the district said it could expand to other schools next year.
