Dockside residents can begin moving items from units over 11-week process

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Residents who were evacuated from the Dockside Condominiums in February will have an opportunity to retrieve their belongings.

The City of Charleston and Dockside Association worked together to approve a plan for residents to safely move out if they choose. It comes after the residents were given a 48-hour notice to vacate the building over structural concerns.

Officials said the structure had insufficient capacity to “continue to be safely occupied” until substantial structural strengthening could be implemented.

At the time of evacuation, residents were unable to move out large items or the bulk of their belongings; however, a plan was put into place that would allow residents back into their units.

According to the plan, each unit was assigned a specific day to move. Four units will be cleared at a time, beginning with the top floor.

Two of the units will have a packing day, while the other two units will move their belongings out of the building. The process will last for roughly 11 weeks, according to documents.

Residents and any movers they hire for the move will be required to sign a legal waiver acknowledging the risks of entering the building.
