Firefighters extinguish fire at King Street auto body shop

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Firefighters responded to an auto body shop on King Street after discovering smoke coming from the building Tuesday night.

Firefighters with the Charleston Fire Department’s Engine 109 were driving through their district around 9 p.m. when they noticed smoke in the area. The smoke was coming from Singleton’s Paint and Body on King Street.

The source of that fire was found less than 10 minutes after units arrived on the scene, and the fire was under control within 20 minutes.

Officials said the building was not occupied at the time of the fire.

Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s office responded to the scene and determined the fire started within the office area, in the vicinity of lithium-ion batteries and a battery charger.

“Due to the extent of the damage to the charger and the batteries, it was unclear if the batteries were charging, or which device may have failed first,” Charleston Fire said.

Fire damage was mostly contained to the office area.

No injuries were reported.
