Car drove around stop bars before fatal train collision in Moncks Corner, police determine
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – The Moncks Corner Police Department released additional details Wednesday regarding a deadly train vs car collision last week.
An initial investigation revealed that a CSX stopped near the railroad intersection at Altman Street on Mar. 12 to allow an Amtrak train going the opposite direction to pass, as the section has two tracks that cross.
Videos from the Amtrak and nearby security cameras show several vehicles going around the safety bars as the Amtrak approached while blowing its horn.
“The stop bars were down, and the stop lights were activated as those vehicles crossed over the railroad tracks,” the department said.
A white Volvo driven by 59-year-old William Foster attempted to drive around the stop bar but collided with the Amtrak train on the driver’s side around 7:20 p.m. Mr. Foster died on the scene as a result.
A 15-year-old girl who was riding in the front passenger seat was critically injured and taken to the hospital.
Police said the intersection on Altman St. is closed while crews repair damaged equipment.
“We are shocked by this tragic incident, which did not have to happen. Drivers should never attempt to cross any railroad tracks where the stop bars are down, and the lights are activated, regardless of how safe you may think it is. We extend our prayers to the young girl and her family as she continues to fight for her life. We want to thank all the first responders who worked and continue to work to save the young lady,” said Chief Lee Mixon.
An investigation into the collision is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Austin McCain at 843-719-7930 or email [email protected].
