City of Charleston honors native NFL player, Super Bowl champion with designated day

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Leaders in the city of Charleston honored a native Philadelphia Eagles player and Super Bowl LIX champion at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

Mayor William Cogswell declared February 25, 2025, Brett Toth Day after the Eagles offensive lineman.

The West Ashley High School alum was responsible for executing the final snap at the Eagles ran out the clock in victory formation to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 40 to 22 in this year’s Super Bowl.

“To be honest, I feel like everyone expects there to be a secret sauce to it… but I think it’s just a reflection of the process and just the preparation we went into that game with,” Toth said when asked about the win.

“There were a lot of guys on that team that were a part of the loss two years ago in Super Bowl LVII in Arizona,” he added.

Toth’s family, including his mom, wife, and son, were all in attendance to support him as he was honored Tuesday night. He hopes his path to the NFL will inspire others in the Lowcountry.

Once he graduated from West Ashley High, Toth was appointed to the US Military Academy at West Point, where he played as an offensive lineman for the Army Black Knights.

He went on to earn a nuclear engineering degree and be commissioned as a first lieutenant in the US Army. The Army then granted Toth a waiver, allowing him to pursue his NFL dream while continuing to serve as an active-duty military member.

“I’m grateful for the role that I was given and being able to contribute in what limited capacity I did, and it’s just great to be able to come back and be able to represent West Ashley and Charleston as a whole,” Toth said.
