DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A New York homicide suspect who stole a vehicle and abandoned it in Dorchester County while on the run was caught in Florida, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

Scott C. Mitchell was arrested by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office around 2 p.m. on Wednesday following a multi-jurisdictional investigation.

Mitchell is accused of killing two men, identified as 55-year-old Marshall VanOven and 58-year-old Daniel McCloe, in Binghampton, New York, according to Nexstar affiliate WIVT.

The men were found dead on Feb. 5. Dorchester County deputies put out a warning on Feb. 8 that they found a suspicious vehicle on Short Cut Road connected to Mitchell.

An investigation confirmed Mitchell stole the vehicle in the county, according to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office.

“The arrest of Scott C. Mitchell is a direct result of the relentless collaboration between the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and our law enforcement partners across multiple states, including New York, South Carolina, and Florida,” Sheriff Sam Richardson said. “We will work tirelessly with all our law enforcement partners to ensure that Mitchell faces full accountability for his actions.”

The sheriff’s office said they plan to execute additional warrants against Mitchell for the vehicle theft.
