Dorchester Heritage Center gets $25K for Native American exhibit

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A future exhibit at the Dorchester Heritage Center will provide an in-depth look at the rich and diverse heritage of local Native American communities.

The center was awarded a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities through the program’s initiative to fund public impact projects.

These funds will help support the development of a permanent exhibition focused on telling guests about the history and culture of Native American tribes in the inland areas of the Lowcountry.

Representatives for the Dorchester Heritage Center say the exhibit will showcase artifacts, interpretive displays, and education programming.

“This grant from NEH is a significant milestone for the Dorchester Heritage Center as we work to expand our educational offerings and preserve the rich history of our region,” said Bob Sherman, Director of the Dorchester Heritage Center. “We are thrilled to bring this important exhibit to life and to honor the cultural contributions of Native American tribes to the Inland Lowcountry.”

The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded a total of $22.6 million to 219 humanities projects across the country.
