SCDOT expedites repairs to College Park Road overpass
LADSON, S.C. (WCBD) – South Carolina Department of Transportation crews will begin repairs to the College Park Road overpass, as it sustained some damage to the beams.
Officials plan on expediting these repairs to ensure all the lanes are fully open. On Feb. 6, an 18-wheeler truck carrying a piece of equipment hit the overpass causing disruption to traffic. SCDOT and law enforcement agencies responded, and assessed the structural integrity of the overpass.
“We’re closing those lanes because we still have crews that are inspecting the damage and getting it ready for repairs. So, we just have those inside lanes that are closed,” Hannah Robinson, media relations manager of SCDOT, said. “We’re not going to open the road unless it’s absolutely safe. There is no doubt in our mind that it is safe for you to drive over.”
The department does not have a timeline of when this project will be completed. However, officials said their priority is fixing this overpass before they need to acquire the funds for it.
“I know this is a huge area for people that are driving to and from Charleston and around that area, but we are expediting the repairs and we’re gonna fix it. Make sure it’s as safe as possible and ready to go,” said Robinson.
The SCDOT asks that the public remain patient and aware as they may continue to work during the day and night, which may cause traffic disruptions.
“We expect there may be some intermittent lane closures on the other section of the bridge and just like any project we do, we do whatever is the least disruptive to normal operation. So, you may see some nighttime lane closures. It’ll just depend on when we can get in and make the repairs,” Robinson said.
