Clemson students present ideas for site of former paper mill plant

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCBD)–Students from Clemson University showcased ideas of what could take up space at the former site of the International Papermill in Georgetown, which shut down operations back in December.

Operations at the paper mill have been shut down for two months, leaving many in Georgetown County without jobs. Architect students from Clemson University said they are determined to improve residents’ overall quality of life by turning the space into community amenities.

Students gathered in Georgetown on Monday to showcase their ideas for the former International Paper Mill Site, which they hope could generate jobs in the community.

“We’re engaged. Trust me, it’s going to be bigger and better, and we hope that this is just a way to help show that it is possible to share your views and how you see something in the future, and this is just a take on how students see Georgetown and then were, hoping the community will share what they think Georgetown could be,” said Matthew Ngang, a Clemson Student.

Four student groups shared a 3D model of what the abandoned plant could look like soon, providing insight to county council members, Mayor Carol Jayroe, and community members. Some plans included a kayak space, retail shops, parks, and living areas.

Officials said it will take years to begin work on the papermill site, but they are excited about starting the process.

“This project is going to be the crown joy project of Georgetown County. We’re happy to start the process on the site,” said Clint Elliott, County Council Member of District 1.

Officials said they plan to release more information at the next meeting in the coming weeks.
