Charleston neighborhood bakery named among the south’s best by Southern Living

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A neighborhood bakery located on downtown Charleston’s famous King Street is one of the best bakeries in the south, according to an acclaimed lifestyle magazine.

Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop is a favorite of Southern Living editor Betsy Watson, who describes why the bakery was included on “The Best Bakeries In The Southlist.

“This teeny storefront in Charleston, South Carolina punches well above its weight with a countertop crowded with baked goods that highlight seasonal flavors and clever combinations, like the cheesy grits Danish I devoured last time I went,” Watson said.

Welton’s is run by Zachary and Hannah, who met while working at Husk Charleston. Following their time at Husk, the pair moved to Yucatan, where Hannah developed a Welton’s favorite, the salted honey pie.

Visitors to the tiny shop can order a wide variety of pastries, such as a sweet or savory Danish, seasonal hand pie, olive oil almond cake, or lemon cloud cookies. Once finished, guests can wash their pick down with coffee, tea, wine, or beer.

Welton’s also offers catering services. The store is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., so you can try it out.
