Melted snow expected to refreeze creating icy road conditions Thursday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Now that snow, sleet, and freezing rain have moved over the area, what can the Lowcountry expect as temperatures will dip back below freezing?

The sun came out on Wednesday, which caused some of the snow sticking to the ground to melt.

Wednesday overnight temperatures are expected to reach record lows in some areas, with wind chills making it feel like 10 to 15 degrees. This will cause the melted snow to refreeze, making the roads ice over and creating the conditions for black ice.

What is black ice? According to Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler, it is a very thin layer of ice that accumulates on pavement. The transparency helps ice blend with the dark pavement, making it difficult to see, especially at night.

Snowfall total samples from across the area record six inches in Cross, four point five inches in Knightsville, and four inches in Moncks Corner, Hanahan, Goose Creek, and North Charleston, Fowler said.

A slow warming trend is on the way, with temperatures predicted to be much milder in the 50s and 60s next week.
