Assistant basketball coach charged after altercation at high school gym

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCBD) – A 64-year-old assistant basketball coach will spend Wednesday night at the Georgetown County Detention Center after trying to bring a handgun into a school gymnasium.

Timothy Hallman was arrested by the Georgetown Police Department shortly after 6:30 p.m. and charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

Investigators learned Hallman and another assistant basketball coach were involved in an altercation at the Georgetown High School gym. The situation escalated, and Hallman went to his vehicle to grab a handgun before attempting to reenter the gym.

Bystanders then stopped Hallman at the gym door and asked him to leave, according to Georgetown police.  Hallman left and drove off campus.

Officers with the police department and deputies from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office went to Hallman’s home, where he was apprehended without incident.

Hallman’s bond hearing will be on Thursday morning.
