Sullivan’s Island church donates turkeys to foster families for the holidays

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A Lowcountry church spent Christmas Eve morning giving back to the community by donating seventy-five turkeys to foster families in the Charleston area.

On Christmas Eve morning at the Church of the Holy Cross on Sullivan’s Island, the men of the church gathered to prep turkey for families fostering children this holiday season.

“To me that’s the real story is these families that have made a huge sacrifice out of love for these kids,” said Pastor David. “We love doing this. It’s a huge privilege to be able to bless other families in need this time of year. We’ve received the greatest gift in Jesus.”

The men came together in the early morning and rain to prepare the turkeys to help those they could. Church team leader Bobby Cummings said the giveaway is a way for the church to be the “hands and feet of Jesus.”

The church is handing out both fried and smoked turkeys.

When preparing the turkeys, church member Alfred Conley said, “First thing you need is time, and I don’t mean the spice. It’s about the preparation, it’s about your team and it’s a lot of hands that helped in this process.”

“This church is a refuge for all of us, from all walks of life, from this island, from everywhere,” Conley continued.

After cooking, church team members load the turkeys, bless the turkeys, and take the turkeys to those foster families caring for children this December.
