New traffic pattern to be implemented at Patriots Point Gateway intersection soon

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – Drivers who travel along Coleman Boulevard near the base of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge will soon see a new traffic pattern.

Contractors will finish the intersection improvements on Coleman Blvd. at Patriots Point Road and Magrath Darby Boulevard in the coming weeks.

Improvements will come with a new traffic pattern for the area, known as the Patriots Point Gateway, which will utilize dual left turn lanes onto Patriots Point Road, and a single left turn onto McGrath Darby Blvd.

Crews have worked for months to refurbish the intersection. It includes new sidewalks for pedestrian and bike use, Palmetto Trees and other foliage were planted, and the roadway was repaved with new striping.

McGrath Darby Blvd. and Patriots Point Road saw widening to include better turn lanes and a second turn lane was added to Coleman Blvd. traveling onto Patriots Point Road.

The new turn lanes were expected to open the first week of September, according to a project timeline. Town officials said drivers should “remain alert and use extra caution” while in the area.

Construction on the estimated $9M project began in February 2022 and is expected to be fully completed in November.
