Moncks Corner man arrested for armed robberies near College of Charleston campus

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Charleston Police announced they have arrested a 21-year-old in connection to two armed robberies that occurred near the College of Charleston campus over the weekend.

Derrick Gaillard of Moncks Corner was charged with four counts of armed robbery, assault, and battery in the first degree and criminal conspiracy on Monday.

He is booked at the Al Cannon Detention Center and is awaiting a bond hearing.

According to Sgt. Chris Stinson, police responded to an armed robbery around 1:10 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Pitt Street and Montague Street. A few minutes later, officers were dispatched to a second armed robbery in the area of Coming Street and Duncan Street.

At each robbery, the two male suspects pointed handguns at the victims and stole their belongings, Sgt. Stinson said.

College of Charleston sent out an alert early Sunday morning warning students of the robberies near campus. The alert said both suspects fled the scene in a vehicle heading east on Calhoun Street.

College of Charleston Public Safety and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office assisted with these cases. The investigation is ongoing.
