Man leads deputies on chase, charged for reckless driving, sheriff’s office says

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Deputies in Berkeley County were led on a car chase and foot pursuit Monday morning. When the suspect was finally stopped, deputies asked why he ran, and he said it was because it was his birthday and he was trying to get home.

28-year-old DeShone Bernard Rivers was arrested and charged with failure to stop for blue lights, reckless driving, driving under suspension (DUS), and unlawful transportation of liquor.

A deputy was on patrol when he noticed vehicles speeding toward him, going 96 mph in a 65 mph zone. The deputy initiated a traffic stop, and one of the cars stopped while the other did not, said Cpl. Carli Drayton, spokesperson for the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

A pursuit for the other vehicle driven by Rivers ensued.

According to the sheriff’s office, he traveled through N Main Street and Sigma Drive up until College Park Road, taking several U-turns to try to lose deputies.

Assisting deputies set up stop sticks on College Park Road, which hit the right two tires of Rivers’ vehicle, which slowly stopped on Ladson Road at Old Trolley Road. At that point, Rivers jumped out of the vehicle and fled.

Shortly after he was caught, and when deputies searched the vehicle, they found 12 grams of marijuana and an open bottle of tequila. They also discovered Rivers’ license was suspended, and it was his second DUS in the past five years.
