Charleston County School District says cyber disruption came from unknown hackers
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)—After Charleston County School District reported network security issues in July, the district said Monday that the disruption came from unknown parties who obtained data.
An investigation into the hack is ongoing, but so far, the district said it is not aware of ‘malicious misuse of school data.’ As the investigation continues, district officials said they will notify those impacted if they discover sensitive data was taken.
“Our dedicated IT staff and forensic experts have been working diligently to deploy additional measures and toolsets to protect our environment and investigate this incident,” the district said. “We are committed to protecting the sensitive data in our care and will work diligently to address this emerging threat to our nation’s education system.”
The district originally reported discovering suspicious activity on July 16, saying it had affected school telecommunications and network connectivity.
