ATV vs. car crash near Harleyville results in one fatality, driver identified
DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Dorchester County Coroner has identified the victim in a fatal ATV vs. car collision that occurred Saturday afternoon.
The crash, which took place on US 178 at Bryant Road, approximately two miles west of Harleyville, claimed the life of 48-year-old John ONeal Way.
According to Lance Corporal Brittany Glover of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. Way was driving a Polaris ATV when it was struck by a 2013 Nissan Altima, both vehicles traveling east on US 178. The collision caused the Polaris to veer off the left side of the road, where it overturned. The Nissan, meanwhile, traveled off the right side of the road and struck a tree.
Way was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:06 p.m., according to the coroner. The driver of the Nissan sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital. Their condition has not yet been updated.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Medical University of South Carolina. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office are actively investigating the collision.
