Tropical depression will likely bring heavy rain, some gusty wind to SC coast

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Tropical Depression Four is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Debby on Saturday over the southern Gulf of Mexico.

“Low shear, very warm water in the Gulf create ideal conditions for intensification,” said Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Josh Marthers.

Forecast data shows the storm tracking north toward Florida’s Big Bend region, and could even be a hurricane before impacting the state’s west coast. Landfall is expected Monday morning.

From there, forecasters say the storm will trek northeast toward the South Carolina coast.

“A significant rain event appears to be setting up for Monday through Thursday based off of the latest guidance,” said Marthers. “Based off of what we see now, we expect 6-10” of rain through Thursday, with higher amounts possible.”

Marthers added that rain amounts will be determined by the storm’s track and forward motion. People should begin making preparations for flooding in flood prone areas, including inland locations.

Gusty wind is also likely.

“High uncertainty regarding whether the center will be over the Atlantic or over land. If the center moves back over water, we’ll need to watch for re-intensification, thus higher wind gusts and possible storm surge flooding,” Marthers said.

Adjustments to the track and local impacts are likely in the coming days. Count on Storm Team 2 for updates as the forecast will change as the storm heads into the Gulf of Mexico and nears Florida.
