Charleston begins annual clean-up downtown after college move-out

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The City of Charleston will work to remove trash and bulk items from crowded downtown streets following the influx of lease turnovers from college students.

The City of Charleston’s Livability and Tourism Department named this initiative ‘Operation Moveout’, it will run from July 31 through August 5.

“Operation Move-out is an essential annual effort designed to enhance quality of life for Charleston residents and visitors alike,” said Dan Riccio, the City’s Chief of the Community Services Section.

The City asks tenants to place trash items on their curbs by 7 a.m. for same-day pickup.

“By proactively managing the disposal of trash and household items during the end-of-July lease turnover, we’re able to prevent the accumulation of waste on our streets and sidewalks, and ensure a clean, safe, and pleasant environment for all,” Dan Riccio added.

Officials released the following instructions for placing items on the curb:

• Only solid waste is to be placed in the green collection bin
• Only recyclables are to be placed in the blue collection bin
• Large household items should be stacked neatly at the curb
• Small personal items and clothes should be in clear bags
• No electronic items are to be placed at the curb and must be taken to the recycling center by the tenant

The City urges tenants to donate gently used items to donation centers and charities.
