Crews search for man who jumped from Georgetown bridge after Sunday night crash

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Rescue crews searched Sunday night for a man who jumped from the L.H. Siau Memorial Bridge into the Waccamaw River following a traffic accident.

A driver involved in a crash in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 17 left his vehicle and was seen jumping from the east side of the bridge, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement personnel saw the man in the water about 300 yards east of the bridge before they lost sight of the man when he went underwater.

The sheriff’s office marine units and other law enforcement and rescue agencies – including Midway Fire Rescue, U.S. Coast Guard, Highway Patrol, and Georgetown Police Department – joined the search late Sunday night.

On Monday morning, Georgetown County Emergency Management cautioned boaters in Winywah Bay near the bridge that public safety personnel were still searching for the man.
