‘They are such nice people’: Walterboro neighbor reacts to shooting that left child, 2 adults dead

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – Neighbors in one Walterboro neighborhood are reacting to a weekend shooting that left a child and two adults dead.

The shooting took place at a home on Hayden Street early Saturday morning in what Colleton County deputies called a targeted act.

“It was bad at one time for drugs. But the last maybe five years or so, they’ve cut down on the drugs – there’s been patrols, so that area they’ve been taken care of,” Sarah Wright said of the neighborhood.

Wright has lived in the neighborhood since 1976 and said Saturday’s shooting was shocking.

“It was early Saturday morning when my husband was on his way to go get coffee. It was all taped off over here. So, we knew something bad happened,” she recalled.

Colleton County deputies located a silver Cadillac that was a vehicle of interest in the crime. It was seen in the area around the time of the shooting. They are now working to determine its involvement in the shooting.

Meanwhile, Wright said she knows the couple who live at the home.

“They are such nice people. It’s so sad. They up in age — I believe Mr. Bill is around his 90s and he has dementia and I think God they didn’t do no harm to him. He could have died, too. He just didn’t know what was going on. And Ms. Barbara at the time, my understanding was, she was in the hospital. Thank God she wasn’t home because she may not be here, too, today,” said Wright.

Wright said a young girl was the child killed in the shooting.

“She didn’t know what was coming. She didn’t deserve to die. It’s such a sad tragedy when things happen like this here in the community. I’m just hoping and praying they’ll get the one that’s behind the scene,” she said.
