Charleston man sentenced to 10 years in federal prison on drug-related charges

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A Charleston man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to possessing with intent to distribute fentanyl and other drugs.

Officers with the Charleston Police Department executed a search warrant on the home of 33-year-old Darrell Troy Capers in March 2022 where they discovered a blue backpack containing fentanyl, cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, and marijuana.

A stolen firearm was also found in the backpack and items consistent with narcotics trafficking, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina.

“The backpack contained a debit card bearing Capers’ name, a pill bottle bearing Capers’ name, and two movie tickets. CPD officers obtained video footage of Capers at the movie theater and at the time indicated on the tickets,” said officials.

U.S. District Judge David Norton sentenced Capers to 120 months in prison followed by a five-year term of court-ordered supervision. Officials say there is no parole in the federal system.

The case was investigated by the Charleston Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lee Holmes is prosecuting the case.
