Alex Murdaugh to be sentenced on federal financial crimes charges

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh will return to the courtroom Monday where he is expected to be sentenced on numerous federal financial crimes charges which he pled guilty to last fall.

Murdaugh, 55, admitted to stealing millions from former clients and pleaded guilty to 22 federal financial crimes including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering.

He is currently serving two life sentences for the murders of his wife and son, and another 27 years on state financial crimes charges. U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel will decide Monday’s sentencing as some charges could mean Murdaugh sees up to 30 years and fines nearly a million dollars.

But there is a motion to throw out a plea deal Murdaugh agreed to with federal prosecutors last year. They say the disbarred attorney has been untruthful about the whereabouts of roughly $6 million and a possible co-conspirator yet to be identified.

The prosecutors want a judge to revoke their end of a plea deal with Murdaugh on theft and other charges and order him to a maximum of well over 100 years in prison when he is sentenced on Monday.

Victims will also have a chance to address Murdaugh during Monday’s hearing. It is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
