Charleston to offer free parking at 2 garages ahead of potential flooding

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston city leaders are preparing for potential flooding associated with a storm system expected to move through the area on Friday.

As part of its flooding action plan, the city will open two garages where residents can park their vehicles free of charge to avoid possible rising water.

Those garages include the 99 West Edge and Charleston Tech Center. Parking is available from 4:00 p.m. Friday until noon Saturday.

All city garages will also be open for people who prefer more convenient options; however, parking in these garages will not be free.

“Residents are asked to not use parking garages in the Medical District which are intended for staff and patients,” the city said.

Meanwhile, the Charleston Police Department will place barricades on vulnerable streets before flooding occurs.

Forecasters say rain is expected to intensify throughout the day Friday with peak heavy rain between 8:00 p.m. and midnight. They warn that flooding from rainfall will coincide with the evening high tide around 7:25 p.m.
