Businessman Ben Navarro to purchase Union Pier

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Lowcountry businessman Ben Navarro has agreed to purchase Union Pier, News 2 has learned.

The 70-acre property on the peninsula, which currently serves as a terminal for Carnival cruises, is slated to be redeveloped after the South Carolina Ports previously announced it would not renew the cruise line’s contract for that space.

Charleston Mayor William Cogswell outlined his vision for the property last month including providing public access to the waterfront, adding significant greenspace, utilizing lower density and height restrictions for building, and affordability.

“Since taking office I have been clear what the city expects from the development of Union Pier. I will not be passive or reactive on this critical undertaking and will ensure our residents are put first in the outcome of this project,” said Mayor Cogswell in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Cogswell went on to say, “Based on what I found to be clear feedback from residents throughout the previous process and echoed more recently with the Riley Center initiatives, I laid out my expectations for this site in a letter to the Ports Authority:  significant public access to the waterfront, more green space than previously proposed, lower height and density so that it is more in keeping with the historic district, elimination of the cruise terminal, meaningful affordable housing component, and for them to work with a local buyer. I remain committed to these key tenants and look forward to proactively working with Mr. Navarro to ensure these conditions are met as he moves forward.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Charleston. The city controls much of the process going forward. While this will no doubt be a complicated plan, I’ll ensure it is grounded in reality and is an amenity that every resident in Charleston can enjoy. This can and should be a project that makes all of Charleston proud, and I look forward to working with Beemok and Mr. Navarro on making this resident-focused vision a reality.”
