3 buildings damaged in Sunday fire on Hagood Avenue

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Three buildings were damaged by a Sunday afternoon fire on Hagood Avenue.

Crews from the Charleston Fire Department (CFD) responded to a structure fire shortly after 5:30 p.m. after Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch Center received multiple 9-1-1 calls.

At the scene, firefighters and other emergency personnel found a large fire burning at a vacant two-story house. They quickly began working to extinguish the flames; however, they said the fire spread into a nearby occupied home.

“Crews shifted their focus to containing the fire and reducing damage to the exposure.   The fire also spread to a home to the East, this fire was quickly brought under control,” said Chief Fire Marshal Michael Julazadeh.

Chief Julazadeh said the vacant structure suffered heavy damage and partially collapsed. He explained an exterior wall of a home to its south suffered significant damage and noted that the fire spread into the attic.

Damage to the other home was minimal.

Officials say the origin and cause of Sunday’s fire remain under investigation.

No injuries were reported; however, two adults and two children were displaced from one of the adjacent homes and three adults were displaced from the second. They are being helped by the American Red Cross.
