Charleston Teacher Alliance voices issues impacting the classroom

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston Teacher Alliance (CTA) released the results of its annual fall survey and Charleston County educators expressed concerns on numerous issues impacting the classroom.

According to a report from CTA, 40% of teachers are more stressed about daily instruction compared to previous years. Nearly half of teachers do not receive a sufficient amount of planning time to prepare their lessons effectively. Over half of teachers said they have to take important schoolwork home because they are not given enough time at school to complete it.

Officials say 631 Charleston County educators completed the survey.

“Given the enormity of the teacher retention problem, it is imperative that the district listens to and addresses teachers’ concerns. Superintendent Huggins has been very responsive to the issues raised in our Fall survey and we are excited to work with her on solutions,” said Jody Stallings, Charleston Teacher Alliance Director.

CTA said a high percentage of teachers expressed these certain initiatives would encourage them to stay in the classroom:

  • Longevity bonuses
  • Universal unencumbered planning time
  • Master Teacher status
  • Having a published salary schedule before signing contracts
  • Improved insurance options
  • Incentivized multi-year contracts
