Mount Pleasant discuss future of town at annual conference retreat

MOUNT PLEASANT S.C. (WCBD)–Leaders in Mount Pleasant discuss ways to improve residents’ lives, focusing on recreation, transportation, and small businesses.

Once a year, government comes together in Mount Pleasant to take stock of where the town stands and where it is heading.

“This is a leadership retreat for the town council and the mayor, and we started off the day talking about what the infinite game is and what not the issues are today but what we need to work on today for Mount Pleasant future 5, 10, 15, 50 years from now, said Will Haynie, the mayor of the town of Mt. Pleasant.

Mayor Will Haynie and all eight town council members are taking on some of the most pressing issues the town is facing, like how to attract, retain, and support small business owners.

“We need to make sure that in the town of Mt. Pleasant, we keep the businesses alive, especially the small businesses, and we are helping to encourage the town to evolve in allowing the change to happen that needs to happen to keep us as a vibrant community,” said John Iacofano, a council member for the town of Mount Pleasant.

Some other topics of discussion are improving traffic in the town and providing resources for a healthy community to flourish. Council said they plan to add new recreation amenities to encourage residents and visitors to lead a healthy lifestyle, which town council member Gary Santos says will have far-reaching impacts.

“Whenever you have a healthy community, the quality of life is better, and that’s the kind of thing I’ve been always working on,” said Santos.

Officials say the talks are just starting, and they plan to revisit the discussion at their next meeting.
