Pinning ceremony held for new North Charleston fire chief

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A pinning ceremony was held Monday for the North Charleston Fire Department’s new leader.

Joseph Munn was named fire chief last year after then-chief Greg Bulanow announced his retirement. He officially took the held at the start of 2024.

Family, friends, and colleagues filled the R. Keith Summey Council Chambers as North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess led the ceremony.

Chief Munn joined the department in October 1984 as a recruit firefighter and worked his way up the ranks to become deputy chief in 2009.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading the North Charleston Fire Department as Fire Chief. I am committed to upholding the department’s proud tradition of service and life safety within the community, and I look forward to continuing this important work with the dedicated members of the department,” said Chief Munn.

North Charleston city officials say that throughout his career, Munn has been instrumental in shaping the department, fostering a culture of excellence, and overseeing numerous critical initiatives that have enhanced the safety of North Charleston’s residents.
