CCSD kicks off monthly community meetings

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston County School District is kicking off a new community engagement initiative.

On Wednesday, CCSD hosted a parent, student, and community meeting at Royal Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston. The meeting marked the start of what will be a monthly occurrence.

“So tonight, we are launching our student, parent, and community engagement meetings, which is basically going to be designed as a monthly meeting throughout the school year and we will also continue it next school year, that engages students, parents and communities of all things Charleston County School District and then things that are happening within their communities,” said Dr. Shavonna Coakley, the Executive Director of School Support and Community Engagement for CCSD.

In one room, parents and community members were introduced to the different departments within the district. They learned about safety procedures, school transportation and the ELA curriculum.

“I’m curious about the ELA, the new curriculum. I’m curious to see the discussion about bus safety. I know that’s an issue with many people who have young children in my neighborhood,” said Patricia White, a CCSD parent who attended the meeting.

Students had the opportunity to engage in open dialogue in a separate room.

“So, for our students, of course we’re talking about those higher learning skills, also talking about becoming community advocates for themselves, but also community advocates within the school system. So, what’s working well in Charleston County School District for you? What are some things we can improve on?” explained Dr. Coakley.

Dr. Coakley said the meetings will result in an action plan, using the feedback from the attendees.

“Participants will be able to fill out an exit survey to talk about what did they hear that was an ‘aha.’ What are some things that they would like for us to consider for next month. And then maybe some things that we really weren’t transparent about because this is all about making sure we’re inclusive, engaging, and responsive to the needs,” said Dr. Coakley.

She said next month’s meeting will be held at the West Ashley Center for Advanced Studies. It is scheduled for February 21st at 5:30 pm.
