Charleston Animal Society offers tips on how to keep pets safe ahead of cold weather

NORTH CHARLESTON S.C. (WCBD)– A cold front is bringing freezing temperatures to the Lowcountry, and the Charleston Animal Society wants to ensure your pets are prepared for the cold.

On Wednesday morning, the Charleston Animal Society sent out an emergency notice advising all pet owners to take precautions ahead of the cold weather.

As temperatures drop, check on livestock frequently and limit outdoor bathroom breaks for pets, especially at night. Before you start your car, make sure that no animals are taking shelter inside and bring in outside dogs and cats, or make sure they have warm, dry places to sleep.

“Ideally, we love to have pets in the home. We know for some families, that’s not possible if their animals are living outside, so make sure they have warm bedding or hay to keep themselves warm, and keep in mind their water can freeze. So they will not have portable water, so make sure to either do something about it to make it warmer or go out and change it,” said Aldwin Roman, the vice president of operations and strategies at the Charleston Animal Society.
