Crews battle large fire at Charleston County landfill

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Crews are responding Monday night to a landfill fire in Charleston County.

Firefighters were notified of the outdoor fire around 8:08 p.m. When they arrived, responders found a large pile of metal in flames that was threatening to spread to a pile of tires.

The flames cause large black smoke plumes that could be seen for a few miles. The City of Charleston’s Hazmat team is on the scene monitoring the air quality.

DHEC is expected to send a representative to check out the scene Tuesday morning.

Crews are still working to extinguish the flames. No injuries have been reported.

The St. Andrews Fire Department, City of Charleston fire departments, and Charleston County Rescue Squad are at the scene.
