Group gathers at Brittlebank Park for second day of protests against Trump Administration
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Protesters gathered in downtown Charleston on Sunday morning for a second day of demonstrations, speaking out against the Trump Administration and its recent actions, including ICE detainments and health care access.
The protest was held at Brittlebank Park with several hundred attending.
Organizers for the demonstration said they wanted to extend the celebration of democracy and Flag Day, as they held three other protests Saturday in Hampton Park, downtown Summerville, and in Walterboro in conjunction with the nationwide ‘50501’ and ‘No Kings’ movement.
“We’re exercising our right for free speech and expressing our concerns over the current regime. Noting that everybody that’s here loves their country, loves our democracy, and they are making space for everyone to express their opinion and their rights about what this current regime is trying to take away,” said Anne Ostapiej, 50501 South Carolina coordinator.
Those who attended shared concerns about the recent actions coming from the Trump Administration, which include issues ranging from immigration to social security to transportation.
“I’m here to stand up for our country, to stop the nonsense and to support the immigrants, democracy, and stand up for human rights,” said protesters Kim Thompson and Esther Peterson.
Organizers said protests have remained relatively peaceful, with around 500 people attending Sunday’s event.
“The vibes out here are definitely beautiful. It’s a little off-putting for someone who’s used to a different type of background when they’re out protesting, but it’s definitely beautiful,” said protester Abraham Kimberlin.
Although it was a smaller crowd, protesters said it was comforting to speak to others who shared similar ideals as they work to bring change to the current administration.
“Gives us a little more room to talk and share with one another,” said Ostapiej.
“I mean, we just believe change needs to happen. This is probably the best response that anyone can do as far as control,” said Kimberlin.
