Charleston to open 2 garages ahead of possible flooding Wednesday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The City of Charleston is monitoring a low-pressure system off the South Carolina coast that could bring heavy rain and potential flooding to the area Wednesday.

Forecasters say high tide is expected at 4 p.m., and the National Weather Service anticipates 1-3 inches of rain across the region, including downtown Charleston, with locally higher amounts possible.

“Minor flooding may occur in areas with poor drainage or where heavy rain coincides with peak tide. Travel during the late afternoon and evening may be affected, and drivers are advised to allow extra time and avoid flooded roadways,” the city said.

To prepare for any flooding impacts, the city has activated some of its flood mitigation plan, including offering free parking for residents at two downtown garages.

The garage at the Charleston Tech Center (997 Morrison Drive) and the 99 WestEdge garage (across from the RiverDogs Stadium, not the Publix garage) will open from 2 p.m. Wednesday until 8 a.m. Thursday.

Additionally, stormwater management crews are clearing storm drains and setting up temporary pumps in flood-prone areas. Water levels are also being lowered at Colonial Lake to help manage runoff.

Police will place barricades and close any road that sees flooding.

The city has asked residents to check and clear storm drains near their homes and reminded people to avoid driving through any standing water.
