Scammers are asking victims to put cash in package for rideshare pickup, deputies say

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers using an “unusual method” for payment.

The sheriff’s office provided to example of recent scam calls: telling the victim they must pay for missing a jury date or saying a relative needs cash.

While these types of scams are not new, the sheriff’s office said it’s the method of payment these scammers are using that they deemed new and unusual.

“People are being told to put cash in a package and put it on their doorstep to be picked up by an Uber or Lyft driver,” explained the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

This should be an immediate red flag. While the sheriff’s office will never call demanding payment, they said anyone who calls and asks you to send cash via Uber or Lyft should understand this is a scam call and not from a government or law enforcement agency.

“Please, if you have any doubts about the call, give the Sheriff’s Office a call at 843-546-5102,” the agency said.
