Woman discovered body on Lake Moultrie while cleaning beach: report

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The body of a 70-year-old man found on the shores of Lake Moultrie Tuesday was discovered by a woman cleaning the beach, according to new details released by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the recreational area off Short Stay Road around 2:30 p.m. for reports of a possible body in the water.

The victim – later identified as John C. Young – was pulled from the water shortly thereafter by members of the Berkeley County Fire Department.

An incident report states that a woman told authorities that she noticed the body while she was cleaning dead birds along the beach and initially mistook it for a bird.

She approached and realized it was a body after seeing it face down in the water, the report continued.

The case is being investigated as a possible drowning, but an autopsy has been scheduled to determine Young’s cause of death.
