Family of 10-year-old victim in Sullivan’s Island car attack speak out
SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – The family of a 10-year-old who was injured during a car attack on Sullivan’s Island last week recounted the incident and shared how they are recovering.
“Next thing you know, I’m running for my life. God saved me, at that moment, he saved me,” said 10-year-old Tanner Czuar, one of the two children injured in the attack.
Tanner ducked to the ground as a car driven by Justin Collin Adams plowed towards him. After hitting two other people, including a teacher, his quick thinking ultimately saved his life.
Now his family is speaking out, saying no family should have to go through what they did.
“If this happened to us, it can happen to anybody,” said Kaitlyn Czuar, Tanner’s mom. “We can’t be ignorant of the seriousness of this.”
After the attack on their son, Kaitlyn and Jason Czuar are passionate about stopping the rise in violence against children. They want lawmakers to crack down on crime, with better mental health services to prevent this type of violence.
“I don’t know how this man got here. There’s a lot of unanswered questions that I am praying will be revealed, and justice will be served for this because we can’t live like this. We can’t live in fear of this happening just by sending our children to school,” said Czuar.
“You just cannot have this lawlessness. People wonder why it is happening all the time; it can happen anywhere. It doesn’t matter what neighborhood you’re in; it doesn’t matter your status in life. It’s going to affect everybody, that’s why we want to see the laws changed,” said Jason Czuar.
The family says they are doing alright, one week after the attack, but ask for prayers for the adult victim: a substitute teacher and mom, who is still in the hospital. She has had two surgeries so far.
“She saved those children. All she thought about was those children; she put everyone above herself because she knew the car was coming for them,” said Czuar.
The family says their community and faith have been instrumental in the recovery process, adding that this situation has brought their family and friends closer to God.
“That would be an amazing gift from God. To use this situation to bring others to Christ, that would be the best thing,” said Jason Czuar.
Charleston County Sheriff’s Office tells News 2 they are still speaking with witnesses, and additional charges may be served against the man accused in the attack.
