Williamsburg County deputies arrest second person in deadly shooting of bystander

WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A second person has been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting of a bystander outside a Hemingway apartment.

Derrick Marquise Cantey, 30, of Columbia, was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter, according to the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to an April 28 shooting on Daisy Lane at the Hemingway Apartments and found a person suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot. That person did not survive.

Officials said an investigation found the victim was in the parking lot of the apartment complex when a physical altercation occurred between several people, including Cantey and another man, Dontavius McCal Mills Jr., who was also arrested.

During the altercation, deputies said the involved individuals struggled for a firearm that was introduced by Mills, resulting in the gun discharging and striking the victim.

The victim, a bystander, had no involvement in the altercation, according to the sheriff’s office. The motive remains undetermined.

Cantey was arrested on May 6 and taken to the Williamsburg County Detention Center. An investigation is ongoing.
