Summerville warns of dangerous driving behavior on newly opened Berlin G. Myers overpass
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – The Town of Summerville said it has heard concerns about dangerous driving behavior on the newly opened Berlin G. Myers overpass.
The parkway extension opened earlier this week. It was designed to improve safety, alleviate congestion, and improve the flow of traffic in the area.
Since its opening, Summerville town officials said there have been reports of drivers unexpectedly needing to exit for Bacons Bridge/Trolley Roads immediately before the overpass, leading to last-minute lane changes and dangerous U-turns.
“If you are traveling on Berlin G from Highway 78 and need to access Bacons Bridge or Trolley Road, please merge into the right lane soon after passing the Gahagan Road intersection,” the town said. “The exit ramp is located shortly before the overpass.”
Town officials said making sudden lane changes or attempting U-turns on the bridge “creates significant safety hazards” and urged people to plan their lane changes.
The Summerville Police Department will increase patrols in the area to help ensure drivers’ safety and to deter these illegal U-turns.
