Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office identifies teen who brought loaded gun to school
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has identified the 18-year-old who brought a loaded firearm to Philip Simmons High School Tuesday.
Jaiden Anderson of Huger was charged with possession of a firearm on school property and possession of a stolen firearm.
School officials alerted the school resource officer that Anderson may have a firearm around 9:30 a.m.
When searched, officials found Anderson had an extended magazine and firearm in his book bag. The gun was loaded and had a round in the chamber, the sheriff’s office said.
“As a father and as your sheriff, I care about our children’s safety,” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis stated. “Knowing that a loaded gun made its way into a classroom is troubling, but I’m incredibly proud of our deputies and the school staff who acted quickly. We will continue to do everything in our power to protect our schools and hold those accountable who threaten that safety.”
Anderson received a $15,000 surety bond on each charge.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and Berkeley County School District continue investigating this incident.
“As safety and security is our highest priority, we take all reports concerning safety seriously. Please continue to encourage your children to report any concerns they may have to a staff member so we can take the appropriate steps to maintain a secure environment on our campus. We appreciate the cooperation and support of everyone who is helping to keep our school safe,” the district said in a statement sent to parents following the incident.
