Detectives arrest man in connection to shooting that killed Charleston woman

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Police announced Tuesday they arrested a 39-year-old North Charleston man for charges connected to a downtown Charleston shooting.

Tyris Asbury was apprehended Monday and charged with three counts of assault and battery in the third degree.

The Charleston Police Department said officers were patrolling the area near Johnson Street at 8:27 p.m. Sunday when they heard gunfire.

They responded and found 24-year-old Briana Cason suffering from a gunshot wound.

She died on the scene from her injuries.

Investigators learned that Ms. Cason was struck by gunfire during a fight that involved several people. Detectives have not determined whether Cason was involved in the fight or the intended target.

An investigation is ongoing.
