Tax deadline extended for the Carolinas, Georgia due to Hurricane Helene

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – For many Americans, their taxes need to be filed by April 15. However, the IRS states that residents in the Carolinas and Georgia will have more time.

Due to the impacts of Hurricane Helene, the new deadline for South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida is Thursday, May 1.

Officials said taxpayers will not need to complete any extra paperwork for the two-week grace period. The IRS is giving an automatic extension past the regular filing date of Tuesday because the agency understands that additional time may be needed to file taxes if residents have been overturned by a disaster this past year.

Additionally, residents can write off a portion of their disaster-related losses, which lowers their tax liability. This could include lost revenue, destroyed property or losses for small businesses.

The IRS states that filers can ask for further extensions until Wednesday, Oct. 15, but if any money is not paid by May 1, interest will be charged.

Any interest or fees normally charged for late payments will not be accrued during the disaster extension, according to the agency.
